I’m an IT professional who delivers BI solutions.
I have skills in a wide variety of technologies but the truth is, these haven’t been the key factor in delivering.
The main factors have been being able to communicate with people, distinguish between wants and needs, articulating solutions, planning a delivery date and meeting it.
I’ve never had all the technical skills required for each project I’ve worked on. But I’m able to learn new technologies fast. Being able to liaise with SMEs on their level is necessary for success.
Some of my recent projects haven’t been in BI. I’ve delivered mobile responsive websites, debugged Dynamix AX code and fixed a bunch of defects in an ASP.Net desktop application. But they’ve all been key source systems to the BI solutions giving me immeasurable understanding of a customers data.
About half of my time on projects is spent doing non-development tasks. I’m also resolving project issues, performing data analysis, managing scope and keeping people up to date.
A large portion of the code I write is not for the solution. It’s for the testing framework that automatically builds, deploys and tests the solution. My customers invest in computers to help them with their jobs, I do the same.
